Varied. Colorful

autumn

It begins with small harbingers. The shadows are getting longer, the sky bluer, the air clearer, the view wider. Trees turn golden yellow and red and soon the leaves are rustling on the ground. The autumn is here. And with it probably the best time for a hiking and wellness holiday in our St. Georg zum See.

cattle drives dates

The summer freshness of the cows ends when the autumn frost begins to leave white marks on the grass and flowers on the mountain pastures in the morning. Then it is time for shepherds, farmers and dairy farmers to accompany their cattle into the valley.

Every year numerous Almabtriebs worth seeing take place all over Tyrol. This doesn't just happen in the mountains and around Lake Achensee, but is celebrated in a festive way: the cattle owners spend days working lovingly making headdresses for their animals. These magnificent wreaths consist of ribbons, plaques, holy images and flowers - such as alpine roses, juniper, mountain pines, fir branches, mosses and lichens. So the happy cattle, who were allowed to spend the summer on the lush alpine meadows, start their ceremonial retreat into the valley. A spectacle that guests and locals celebrate together.

The Almabtrieb is a tradition that has existed for centuries, where the farmers say thank you for an accident-free summer with a colorful festival. If an accident has occurred during the alpine season, the ceremonial deduction is cancelled. To ensure that the summers remain peaceful in the future, the animals have their loud bells around their necks: These guide the animals safely down to the village on the way from the alpine pasture and protect them from enemy demons.

With traditional music, the Almabtrieb becomes a folk festival The peasant families happily await the safe arrival of the decorated animals: They also make themselves pretty with dirndls and Sunday costumes. On this day, the most delicious regional specialties such as donuts, fresh milk, alpine cheese, farmer's bacon and fragrant bread are prepared. With music and entertainment, all this ends in a cheerful folk festival - a spectacle of smells, sounds and colors.
